Do Trade Unions Cause Unemployment: Trade Unions, Real Wages and Economic Progress
Historically economists have not looked favourably on trade unions. This can be explained by the dominant role that profession gives to real wages as a charge on production. Whatever positive role rising real wages play in encouraging consumption and hence employment is overwhelmed, it is argued, by the negative influence they have on production costs – or, more precisely, on profits. Consequently, when considering the role of trade unions, when they have not been sceptical as to whether they have any influence at all, economists have generally been convinced of their damaging effect.
