Introduction
This paper discusses the relationship between technical change, institutional change and long cycles in economic development. This is an enormous topic and an extremely complex one. Some of the problems which are raised have been debated by social scientists for a long time and the paper certainly does not pretend to offer new solutions. It is an attempt rather to locate some of the developments in innovation theory in a wider context of evolutionary economics.
