The Target

This paper speculates with the idea that consumers are players in social competition. Strategic choice behavior, in which the consumption patterns of other people and groups matter, is assumed. Our aim is to review the most recent economic analysis of competition over social standings. By “Consumption as a Game” we refer to a point of view which examines game-like attributes of consumption in a very general sense. Importantly, we do not claim that all consumption is determined by competitive elements. It seems that the importance of consumption in the competition over social standing varies. In some historical periods there has been more concern about status consumption that in some other periods.
