Consumption as a Form of Ideological Thought and Action
In every society there are a number of different, crisscrossing socio-structural divisions partitioning the population. These place the members of society into either equal or hierarchical, asymmetrical relations to each other. Contrary to horizontal relationships, hierarchical ones are sociologically interesting in that they face the classes or groups at the apex with a fundamental problem: How to maintain the status quo whilst excluding the use of violence?
