From education to working life: factors influencing youth employment

Other Publications, Studies 83 Ulla Hämäläinen

The study examines the position of young people in the labour market from an employment perspective. First, it describes, using the so-called impact dataset based on the Employment Statistics Register, the relative position of young people and its changes in the 1990s in the labour market.

Factors affecting young people’s entry into employment and their ability to remain employed are analysed from both the perspective of firms and individuals. From the firms’ perspective, the study examines the importance of industry, firm size, technological intensity, and employer sector (public vs. private) for youth employment. From the individual perspective, the effects of education and prior work history on employment are analysed.

The results obtained from the impact dataset are compared with findings from previous empirical and theoretical studies on the position of young people in the labour market. (AI translation)
