The wage structure and career paths of Finnish industrial workers based on panel data
The study showed that there were no major changes in the mechanisms of wage formation in manufacturing over the period 1980–1995. Wages are still clearly based on collective agreement classifications and provisions.
Although the data does not extend to the turn of the millennium, the results are largely generalisable to the present day, as the basic features of wage formation and wage structure change very slowly. During the period examined, firms’ tasks and the associated skill requirements became increasingly differentiated, so that in some firms relatively simple tasks are performed, while in others more demanding tasks are carried out.
The most significant change after 1995 is likely the increasing prevalence of performance-related and profit-sharing bonuses. (AI translation)
