Abstract

The Labour Institute for Economic Research transport study examines Finland’s railway and road transport networks, as well as the transport system more broadly. Regarding transport networks, the study updates estimates of their extent and assesses investment needs. It also analyses how capital tied up in rail and road infrastructure affects transport volumes on both railways and roads.

The second main focus is bus transport and its competitive tendering, which began in the largest cities. The study provides an overview of how competition has developed. Using a dataset compiled for this research, it also evaluates the effects of bus market competition on transport volumes and consumer prices.

Finally, the study examines the employment effects of tendering based on a survey of bus drivers and analyses how competition has affected wages using a comprehensive panel dataset linked to Statistics Finland data. (AI translation)
