Mergers and acquisitions in Finland 1989–2003. Effects of corporate acquisitions on the number of employees and establishments, and on productivity

Other Publications, Studies 100 Eero Lehto

In Finland, corporate acquisitions on average reduce the size of the workforce and, at best, improve labour productivity. The effects of acquisitions are weaker when the buyer is foreign. Acquisitions made by foreign buyers are mainly associated with reductions in headcount and the closure of establishments. Acquisitions by domestic buyers also have such contraction effects, but in addition they promote the establishment of new establishments and improvements in labour productivity. (AI translation)
