The Economist “machine” is an online expert panel of economists. This article reviews the first five years of the Finnish economist “machine”. It addresses the following questions: Why was the Economist “machine” established? Who initiated it? How does the Economist “machine” operate? How are questions formulated and who responds to them? On what issues do economists agree or disagree? What kinds of questions are economists unable to answer? What level of visibility does the Economist “machine” receive in public debate?
