Finland’s public sector in international comparison

Other Publications, Reports 8 Tuomas Matikka

Abstract

The report compares the size of the public sector, taxation, and public expenditure between Finland and various countries. The 20 countries included in the comparison are divided into three country groups: countries in Finland’s neighbouring region, large industrialised nations, and small EU countries. The first part of the report examines the size of the public sector and the welfare state, as well as the balance of public finances and public indebtedness. This is followed by a comparison of the overall burden of taxation as well as, separately, the taxation of labour, capital and corporate income taxation, and consumption taxation. The final section focuses on examining the expenditure structure of the public sector and compares the most significant public expenditure items across the different countries. (AI translation)
