Prospects for industry, construction and business services
This report is an abridged version of the full sector forecast, which examines the recent development of key industrial sectors and business services and assesses the development prospects for these sectors for the years 2009–2011. The international economic crisis also struck the Finnish economy with full force. The sectors examined in this report have suffered the most: export industry, construction, and business services. Forecasting the future development of these sectors is comparatively difficult in the current situation. The same uncertainty that applies to assessments and forecasts of overall economic development also applies to the assessments of the future development of the sectors examined in this report.
This report begins with an overview of the recent development of the Finnish national economy and the sectors under examination. This is followed by a sector-specific forecast for the output and employment of the sectors examined. The sector-specific forecasts are so-called model forecasts. They have been derived from a model describing sectoral development, which is linked to the Labour Institute for Economic Research’s (PT’s) macroeconomic model of the overall economy.
The sector forecast was commissioned from the Labour Institute for Economic Research by the Federation of Salaried Employees, the Chemical Industry Union, the Paper Workers’ Union, the Finnish Association of Business School Graduates, the Salaried Employees’ Union Erto, and the New Engineers’ Union. These unions have also funded this report. (AI translation)
