Jukka Pekkarinen was born on 25 August 1947 into Finland’s largest birth cohort to date. That same cohort is now approaching retirement age, but its members still occupy decisive positions in many respects in Finland’s working life, civil service, and research. The Finnish welfare state was built around the lifecycle needs of the baby boom generations. As the baby boomers step aside within the next ten years, they leave others with a challenge born of their sheer numbers. The baby boom generations have considerable numerical voting power and also the will to look after their own interests in retirement as well. It is not clear how this challenge will be met. The willingness of younger generations to maintain solidarity both between and within generations is likewise not a given. (AI translation)
