Employee wages amid corporate upheavals
Abstract
Employment, productivity, and innovation in Finland’s business sector have experienced significant turning points during this millennium. A period of strong growth continued until 2008, followed by a collapse during 2009–2014. After 2015, a strong recovery began.
At the individual level, nominal wage growth has slowed during this millennium. In recent years, the best outcomes have been observed among workers with advanced degrees, particularly in commercial fields and STEM areas. In wage growth comparisons, the largest recent gains have gone to job changers within the STEM group. Among employees who remained in the same company, the strongest wage growth in recent years has occurred in rapidly expanding firms, indicating that continuing employees’ wages respond to firm growth.
Overall, individual-level wage developments reveal several interesting aspects of the nature and structure of the shortage of skilled labor. (AI translation)
