Listen 00:30

We organize seminars for researchers on Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. The seminars are held either in the seminar room (Economicum, Arkadiankatu 7, 4th floor), in hybrid format, or via Teams. You can see how the event is arranged from the seminar title. The research presentations at the seminar mainly consist of ongoing research projects, and the purpose of the seminar is to discuss and comment on questions related to the research. The presentations made in the seminars are not intended for publication.

13.5. Vesa-Matti Heikkuri (TUNI): Source Decomposition of Inequality Revisited (hybrid).

Abstract: This paper revisits the longstanding question of how to decompose inequality indices into contributions of factor components, such as labor income, capital income, and taxes and transfers. We start from the axiomatic framework of Shorrocks (1982) and discuss why one of his core axioms, two factor symmetry, is not suitable for rank-dependent inequality indices such as the Gini coefficient and top income shares. We propose an alternative axiom, monotonicity, to replace two factor symmetry and show that the so-called natural decomposition is the unique source decomposition that satisfies the axioms for any rank-dependent inequality index. Furthermore, we show that the marginal decomposition by Lerman and Yitzhaki (1985) can be uniquely derived from a similar framework where two of the axioms are adjusted. Finally, we show how these decompositions can be interpreted geometrically in the case of the Gini coefficient.
