Small, open EU countries facing the challenges of globalisation: an examination of saving and investment

Other Publications, Reports 9 Markku Lehmus

Abstract

The report examines the development of saving and investment in certain small, open EU countries. The countries under examination are Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The aim is to determine how these countries have adapted to the changing economic environment (globalisation) and how much their development shares common features with Finland. Of particular interest are the current account balance, corporate investment, functional income distribution, and direct investment. The analysis is descriptive in nature and is conducted country by country. Finally, the observations made about the countries are brought together and compared with Finland’s development.
