The determinants of nurses’ transitions into and out of health care

Working Papers 228 Kenneth Snellman

The nurses’ pay and choice of industry in Finland during the time period 1987–2001 are examined. Some
support is found for the industry specificity of the human capital of the nurses. More experience of other
industries increases the probability of work outside the care industry. More experience of the care industry
raises the probability of employment in it. Lower pay increases the probability of a change of industry. The pay in other industries has on average grown faster than in the health care sector.
